The establishment of the State of Israel and its continued existence provide inspiration for Jewish communities everywhere. However, both its birth and its survival have been achieved at a high cost of lives lost in armed conflict. Even now the Israel Defence Forces continue to sustain casualties. Every life lost is an individual tragedy for the Jewish people; this special prayer, an adaptation of the standard El Male Rachamim Memorial Prayer, affirms that the service men and women who gave their lives in defence of their country will not be forgotten and expresses the hope that their soul will find eternal rest.
