In this prayer we ask God to grant eternal rest to the soul of the departed. In many synagogues it is recited on the Sabbath before the Yahrzeit and it may also be recited at the cemetery when visiting the grave of the deceased. It is a personal rather than a general prayer, and the reader has the opportunity to include the Hebrew name of the person for whom the prayer is being said.
There are two versions of the prayer, one for a male and one for a female friend or relative. You can hear the prayer sung by Cantor Chaim Adler and you can read the text in Hebrew, in English transliteration or in translation. There is an additional opportunity to read and listen to the prayer in the Memorials section.
